Stitchable Chinese Arts
Fashion Design Competition and Catwalk Show 2023/24
By participating in various workshops on traditional Chinese clothing and using digital fashion design software and interactive multimedia platforms, primary and secondary students learned to design fashionable clothing inspired by traditional Chinese art and cultural elements and catch a glimpse of the dynamic and ever-changing fashion industry.
Apart from cultivating an interest in Chinese art and culture through fashionable clothing design, students also developed an aesthetic sense and increased their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills. In addition, students had the opportunity to work with the School of Fashion and Textiles to create their designs and present them in a catwalk show.
The theme of this design competition was “Modern China-Chic”. Primary and secondary students were required to design and sketch a “T-shirt” and a “whole garment outfit” respectively. The primary and secondary categories’ finalists participated in the second-stage workshops (from April to May 2024) to visualise their designs into real garments with the support of the fashion design teachers and students at the School of Fashion & Textiles. Their designs were presented in a catwalk show at the HKCEC on 29 August 2024.
The entries for the competition must display the elements of Chinese culture and art and any rendering techniques were accepted (e.g. colour pencils, markers, pastels, digital tools). A 200-word description must also be included to explain the design idea and its connection with Chinese art and culture.
A judging panel comprised of members of the Education Bureau and the School of Fashion and Textiles of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University selected the winning designs from each category. The selection criteria were (i) matching the theme, (ii) originality and creativity, (iii) use of Chinese art and cultural elements, and (iv) overall appearance.
